Attention deficit disorder ( ADD) and a related condition, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), whether in a child or adult, are characterized by an inability to concentrate, pay attention, think clearly, remember or learn effectively. A child may have experienced birth trauma, head injury, insufficient creeping and crawling, and may have thereby impaired important neurological organization that is so vital in learning and behavior. Nutritional deficiency related to serotonin and tryptophan may also be related to attention deficit hyperactive disorder.

A child with ADD may also be exhibiting a stress reaction to marital discord or to other dysfunctions in the home.
