Yoga is the systematic purification of
the body and the mind through proper exercise, proper breathing, proper
diet, relaxation, positive attitude and meditation, for the purpose of
becoming a healthy and harmoniously integrated person , and thereby
attaining the full potential of one’s being.
Hatha Yoga deals with the physical
exercise and the breath. In the Sanskrit language, "ha" and
"tha" are symbolic expressions of sun and moon, right and
left, male and female, active and passive.
Hatha Yoga stretches, tones, and
strengthens the body while increasing one’s concentration and
awareness. Students practice meditation, breathing, relaxation and yogic
postures to create harmony and balance in their lives.
When practicing Hatha Yoga, three major
principles are followed for protection and for the development of
postures: Move slowly. Be gentle. Maintain Awareness. Participants are
encouraged to become sensitive to inner feelings and to never go beyond
their comfortable capacity. No competition with anyone else is
appropriate in yoga class. Students are reminded not to push beyond the
point where they are at the moment , and to cheerfully accept the body,
just as it is.
Yoga philosophy incorporates the concept
of "Namaste," a well-known Sanskrit greeting with a meaning
somewhat similar to that of the Hawaiian "Aloha" which, on a
very simple level could be translated as, "The spirit in me salutes
the spirit in you."
